Problem
58,000 tons of eggshells are discarded in Argentina and approximately 2,000 tons in the United States by the poultry industry for the production of chicken and egg products. This waste is ultimately disposed of without any treatment, costing producers 870 million Argentine pesos annually and approximately $80 million USD in the United States. It also negatively impacts landfill soils due to salinization and the release of tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere from shell decomposition. The poultry industry is thus missing out on a significant opportunity to recover this waste and generate high-value-added products from it.
