The paper studies Argentina’s exportable agri-food supply, with a focus on its global positioning. This first issue includes an in-depth analysis of the sectors of vegetables, fruit and nuts (including beverages), and dairy products.
Argentina is among the main global players in food production and trade. This position is based on a strategic combination of factors of production. Firstly, an extensive agricultural tradition has given rise to highly-qualified human capital and a wealth of consolidated technical knowledge at all stages of the production chain. Secondly, Argentina has developed agribusiness value chains, which incorporate cutting-edge technologies in biotechnology, agricultural machinery, artificial intelligence, satellite services and robotics, among others. These capabilities are enhanced in an extensive and diverse territory, characterised by the outstanding quality of its natural resource –water, air and soils–, which enables the production of a wide range of agri-food goods.
The convergence of these capacities places Argentina as an agri-food powerhouse, with global leadership in strategic areas such as soy, corn, sorghum, barley and beef. At the same time, Argentina stands out for its productive diversity, which allows it to offer a range of agri-food goods that are hard to match internationally.
In 2024, 57% of Argentine exports corresponded to agri-food. The country is thus positioned as a reliable supplier in the international market, backed by the quality of its products, competitive prices and a recognised export track record. Likewise, its role is key in terms of global food security, contributing to the stability of markets in multiple agri-food sectors.
The aim of the work is to analyse Argentina’s exportable agri-food supply, with special attention to its global positioning, in particular for those less widespread products that compose it, based on the definition of “Exporting Complexes” of INDEC. In this sense, the agri-food exports sectors are initially classified according to their export value, and then analysed.
In this first issue, the sectors of vegetables, fruit and nuts (including beverages) and dairy products are analysed in detail. In future reports, the analysis will be extended to the remaining complexes that constitute the Argentine exportable agri-food supply.
