During the 40th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, the resolution on "Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in Nicaragua," promoted by Argentina and presented on behalf of our country, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay and Peru, was adopted. The resolution expresses concern over reports on human rights violations and serious abuse that began in April 2018, with disproportionate use of force to repress social protests and acts of violence by armed paramilitary groups, as well as illegal arrests and arbitrary detentions, harassment, torture and sexual violence perpetrated during detentions.
Furthermore, the resolution requests the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, to prepare a comprehensive written report on the human rights situation in Nicaragua, to be presented at the forty-second session of the Human Rights Council.
At the presentation of the resolution before the Human Rights Council, the Permanent Representative of Argentina to International Organizations in Geneva, Carlos Foradori, stressed on behalf of all the countries that co-sponsored the resolution that "we cannot remain indifferent to the suffering of human beings anywhere in the world," and explained that "the principle of non-intervention in domestic affairs cannot be a shield for some Governments to systematically violate the human rights of their citizens."
The resolution was adopted by a vote of 23 in favour, 21 abstentions and only 3 against, and there were 47 co-sponsors.
