Today, 25 November, we commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
Argentina currently pursues an active foreign policy on this matter and takes part in initiatives, programmes and actions, alongside specialized organizations and members of the international community, with a view to implementing effective measures for women's economic, social and political empowerment and the prevention and eradication of gender-based violence at the national, regional and global levels.
The Cooperation Agreement signed between Argentina and UN Women to inaugurate a UN Women's Office in Argentina and the implementation of the National Programme for Equality are evidence of the work on this matter. Furthermore, Argentina is part of the "Spotlight" Initiative, a joint programme by the United Nations and the European Union aimed at preventing and eliminating femicide, which will be implemented in the Provinces of Buenos Aires, Jujuy and Salta, as well as at the national level.
Since 2008, the UN Secretary-General launches on 25 November the UNiTE Campaign, which aims at affording greater visibility and implementing actions related to the prevention and eradication of violence against women and girls through an activism campaign ending on 10 December 2018.
Violence against women entails human, economic and social costs which hinder our development as a country. Preventing and stopping abuses against women is a concrete imperative which reflects the willingness of the Argentine Government and civil society to strive towards a world without gender-based violence.
