On May 29, a meeting was held at Palacio San Martin with Borja Díaz, the Director of the Cooperation Program between Latin America, the Caribbean and the European Union on Drug Policy (COPOLAD), to discuss cooperation in the fight against illicit drugs.
The meeting was opened by the Undersecretary for Foreign Policy, Marcia Levaggi, and was attended by the Secretary for the Fight Against Drug Trafficking and Organized Crime of the Ministry of Security, Martín Verrier; the Undersecretary for Drug Prevention, Research and Statistics of the Secretariat for Comprehensive Policies on Drugs of the Argentine Republic (SEDRONAR), Gustavo Segnana; the Undersecretary for Criminal Policy of the Ministry of Justice, Alberto Nanzer; and officials from the European Union Delegation in Argentina.
During the meeting, a fruitful discussion was held on cooperation in the fight against illicit drugs and its future, recognizing that effective international cooperation is essential to address criminality in this field. Likewise, emphasis was placed on the fact that there is collaboration among the different Argentine Ministries, including this Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for fighting drug trafficking and reducing the demand for drugs, and related crimes.
Both parties welcomed the organization of the “International Seminar on Recovery, Management and Allocation for Social and Community Use of Assets Confiscated from Drug Trafficking and Organized Crime”, held by COPOLAD and related organizations, on 30 and 31 May at the School of Law of the University of Buenos Aires.
Finally, the Undersecretary for Foreign Policy, Marcia Levaggi, pointed out that the meeting represented the political expression of Argentina's great interest in cooperating in this field with the European Union and its Member States, which are key partners for Argentina, and its bi-regional COPOLAD Programme. She also stressed that Argentina is a reliable partner for the European Union due to its political determination to fight drug trafficking and illicit drug use.
