Argentine Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra and Mexican Foreign Minister Claudia Ruiz Massieu held a productive work meeting yesterday in Mexico City, at which they defined the bilateral work agenda for this year.
Foreign Minister Ruiz Massieu expressed President Enrique Peña Nieto's gratitude for President Mauricio Macri's invitation to hold a state visit to Argentina on 29 July. The delegations of both countries undertook to work together and coordinately to organize it.
Malcorra and Ruiz Massieu agreed that the visit is a landmark in the relaunch of bilateral relations. In addition, they decided to hold in Buenos Aires the meeting of the Strategic Partnership Council, chaired by both Foreign Ministers, as well as the meetings of its three committees: the political affairs committee, the economic, trade and investment affairs committee, and the cooperation committee.
The Foreign Ministers discussed the main issues on the strategic agenda in the fields of politics, economy and cooperation. They agreed to continue working towards maintaining an up-to-date relationship and to prioritize the areas in which Argentina and Mexico have shared interests. They also stated that their aim was for the dynamism of the strategic partnership to transcend the bilateral level and boost greater visibility for Latin America in international forums. To such end, they underscored the fundamental role played by the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) as the highest political forum of the region.
The Foreign Ministers discussed the Question of the Malvinas Islands, and Minister Ruiz Massieu reaffirmed Mexico's held position in support of Argentina's legitimate rights, for which Minister Malcorra was grateful.
They agreed to continue working jointly at a multilateral level in the promotion and protection of human rights, disarmament, the fight against climate change, and the fight against drug trafficking. Malcorra welcomed Mexico's decision to resume its participation in United Nations peacekeeping operations and offered cooperating in this field, in which Argentina has vast experience.
