On 1 February 2018, the Administrative Commission of the River Plate (CARP in Spanish) and Boskalis Dredging International signed a contract under CARP's International Call for Bids No. 1/2017 for the Deepening and Maintenance Dredging of the River Plate Channels between km 37 (Barra del Farallón) and km 0 of the River Uruguay (Martín García Channel).
The dredging work will comprise two stages: the first stage, to be undertaken in the next 12 months, will consist of the deepening dredging of the Martín García Channel at 34 feet (10.36 metres) on soft bottoms and at 38 feet (11.58 metres) on hard bottoms. The second stage will consist of the necessary maintenance dredging to keep the Martín García Channel's new design.
The signing of this contract marks the end of the process that began on 18 April 2017, when the Administrative Commission of the River Plate launched the international call for bids for deepening and maintenance dredging services.
This major work is the result of Argentina and Uruguay's joint economic efforts. It will enable larger vessels with greater cargo capacity to navigate, thus reducing freight costs in order to boost regional and international trade and improve navigation safety, vessel traffic management, and environmental protection.
