The Argentine Republic, as anticipated in the official statement issued on 2 August, unequivocally concludes that the undisputed winner of the presidential election held on 28 July in Venezuela is Edmundo González Urrutia. The majority of the Venezuelan people voted for his candidacy and the will of the people must be respected.
In addition, the Argentine Republic condemns the criminal charges brought against the winning presidential candidate and the main opposition leader, as well as the arbitrary detention of key members of the opposition, journalists and press workers.
The Argentine Republic reiterates its call for the Venezuelan authorities to comply with the obligations under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations relating to the immunity and inviolability of diplomatic missions. In this regard, Argentina notes that the Argentine Embassy in Caracas remains without electricity, as supply was interrupted over a week ago, and requests that it be restored promptly.
