On the second anniversary of the commencement of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the Argentine Republic reiterates its strong condemnation of the invasion and urges the Russian Federation to immediately cease the unlawful use of force and the military operations in Ukrainian territory, as well as to withdraw its military equipment and personnel.
The Argentine Government firmly advocates respect for the principles of the UN Charter and of general international law, in particular the duty to respect the sovereignty of States and the principle of territorial integrity, the peaceful settlement of disputes and the protection of the human rights of the civilian population affected by the conflict.
On this significant date, Argentina expresses its concern over the displacement of children within Ukraine and the deportation of children to the Russian Federation, which has been documented by international organizations and constitutes a violation of international humanitarian law.
In addition, Argentina strongly condemns the acts of violence committed against civilians and civilian infrastructure by the Russian Federation. Argentina especially calls on the Russian Federation to avoid any action that could jeopardize nuclear facilities or facilities with radioactive material and expose the population to even greater suffering.
Argentina has provided humanitarian aid to Ukraine by deploying a mission in which Argentine experts from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ White Helmets Commission provided assistance —both in Poland and Romania —in evacuation and containment efforts for refugees seeking help to leave the war zone. Additionally, our country has contributed to Ukrainian relief efforts through 16 shipments of humanitarian supplies.
The Argentine government reiterates its urgent call on the parties to de-escalate the conflict. We are convinced that diplomacy and dialogue are the only way to avoid further suffering and find a fair and lasting solution. In this regard, we support the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General and other actors that continue working to facilitate a constructive agreement between the parties.
This war is a catastrophe for Ukraine and its people, and its ramifications have serious global consequences. Argentina will continue to promote dialogue and a peaceful arrangement to put an end the conflict. Only peace, in accordance with the UN Charter and international law, will prevent an increase in the number of innocent victims.
