The Foreign Ministry’s Undersecretary for the Promotion of Exports, Investment, Education, Science and Culture, Ramiro Velloso, and other Undersecretariat officials held a virtual meeting on Wednesday 17 January with tea producers from Misiones, with the goal of exploring the opening of non-traditional markets, given that the sector is currently facing overproduction.
Authorities of the Secretariat for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries; the Argentine Animal Health and Agri-food Quality Service; and the Ministry of Agriculture and Production of the Province of Misiones also attended the meeting, where strategies to open non-traditional markets, such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, were discussed.
To this end, the heads of the economic divisions of Argentina’s Embassies in those countries explained the opportunities offered to the sector by these markets. In this respect, the conditions for accessing these markets were pointed out and support was offered for participating in the Gulfood Fair, to be held from 19 to 23 February in Dubai, among other trade promotion actions.
Argentina is the world's ninth largest producer of tea and 95% of its tea production comes from Misiones.
According to data from the Argentine Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC), in the first 11 months of 2023, Argentina’s tea exports reached USD 70 million. The top destination for Argentina's sales abroad is the United States, which concentrates 70% of its exports, followed by Chile and Germany, to which sales worth nearly USD 6.5 million were made in 2022.
