Argentina, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Paraguay, Peru, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay strongly and utterly condemn the arrest warrant issued by a Specialized Panel of the Supreme Tribunal of Justice against Edmundo González, opposition candidate in the presidential election held on 28 July 2024.
This arrest warrant was issued for a number of alleged crimes and is yet another attempt to subdue González and disregard the will of the Venezuelan people, which constitutes political persecution.
In Venezuela, arbitrary detentions abound, as there are no separation of powers or basic judicial guarantees. We condemn these dictatorial practices and reaffirm our tireless and continuous efforts to demand that Venezuelan authorities guarantee Edmundo González Urrutia's life, integrity and freedom.
