The “Local Dialogue on Human Rights between the European Union (EU) and Argentina” took place at the Palacio San Martín, seat of Argentina’s Foreign Ministry, completing its eighth edition since its establishment in 2008. The previous edition of this Dialogue took place in June 2022, at the European Union office in Buenos Aires.
The EU delegation was led by Amador Sánchez Rico and included representatives from 13 embassies from Member States accredited in the country. On the part of Argentina, the delegation was headed by the Director of Human Rights, Minister Christian Machuca.
During the meeting, cooperation was addressed in multilateral spheres, particularly in the United Nations Human Rights Council where the EU and Argentina share initiatives and positions on many questions. Other topics considered included rights of children, older adults, people with disabilities; political and civil rights; rule of law, justice and penitentiary system; situation of migrants and refugees; indigenous peoples; the relationship between human rights and digital transition; companies and human rights; freedom of religion and beliefs, among others.
Both delegations highlighted the importance of this space for dialogue that allows for an enriching exchange of experiences, public policies and good practices, with a view to identifying new areas of cooperation. Argentina and the EU are actors who share values and, as such, play a significant role at regional level and also in multilateral forums.
