During the visit to Argentina of the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad, Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie and Qatari Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, chaired in the morning a working meeting at the Palacio San Martín with a view to analyzing different trade opportunities between both countries.

Together with the Argentine Minister of Finance, Nicolás Dujovne; the Secretary of Agro-industry, Luis Etchevehere, the Secretary of Energy, Javier Iguacel, and the Secretary for International Economic Relations, Horacio Reyser, Faurie stated that both countries are in a position to "increase bilateral trade -which is currently low- in several areas and to achieve a more substantive economic relationship."

Moreover, the Foreign Minister underscored Mercosur's interest in exploring trade opportunities with Qatar, as the regional bloc has been doing with various mechanisms and countries.

The Qatari Foreign Minister stated that Qatar has a great interest in investing in Argentina, to which he referred as "a promising market". "We have analyzed the economic reforms carried out by President Macri's administration and we believe that they will foster the possibility of exploring further trade opportunities," he added.

The Qatari delegation was comprised of the Minister of Economy and Commerce, Sheikh Ahmed Bin Jassim Bin Mohammed Al Thani, the Chief of the Amiri Diwan, Sheikh Khalid Bin Khalifa Bin Abdul Aziz Al Thani, and the Director of the Qatari Fund for Investments, Sheikh Faisal Bin Thani Al Thani, among others.

Minister Dujovne outlined the general prospects of the Argentine economic and financial situation, which is once again integrated to the world after years of isolation, and described the goals for fiscal equilibrium and the extent of the agreement with the IMF. Afterwards, Qatari government officials and Argentine businesspeople engaged in intense dialogue on business and investment prospects in the presence of leading representatives of the food, pharmaceutical, agriculture and animal production industries.

Qatar is a major investor at the global level and Argentina offers investment opportunities that are worth considering, in strategic sectors such as agro-industry, mining, communications, renewable energy, infrastructure and logistics, oli and gas, software and knowledge-based services, retail and tourism. Argentina is a global leader of the food market and it can contribute even more to food security, which is one of Qatar's highest priorities.
