Argentina - Ukraine: Foreign Ministers' meeting in the context of the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly

20 September 2017
Información para la Prensa N°:
410/17

Today, Argentine Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie held a bilateral meeting with the Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Pavló Klimkin, within the framework of the 72nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly being held in New York.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations and also the 120th anniversary of the first Ukrainian immigration to Argentina, which are of great importance since our country has a large community of around 350 thousand immigrants from the Ukrainian diaspora.

As regards trade, the Ministers expressed that mutual exchange has great potential for growth and diversification. Historically, Argentina has had a trade surplus with Ukraine (with a slight increase in 2016). Argentina is the sixth Latin American supplier of Ukraine, and, even though Argentine sales are mostly of agri-food products, Ukraine's market offers many trade opportunities for Argentine pharmaceutical products and wine. The Ministers also agreed to cooperate in the fields of nuclear and space technology.

They also discussed the possibility of a visit to Argentina by Ukrainian President Petró Poroshenko next year.
